Candles and the Candlelight Service

There are a variety of reasons for holding Candlelight Services and many symbolic meanings associated with the various elements. The group or church holding the service usually determines these prior to organizing the event. Though the symbolism may be different in the variety of settings, the actual execution of the service is similar. The tradition is quite old and practiced among many denominations, spiritual groups, and religions all over the world.  

Candlelight Services are typically held after dark, sometimes outside, or in a dimly lighted environment. Small candles are given to participants and are then lit at a specific time, often during a specific song or prayer, and then extinguished at the end of the service. The lighting of the candles represents the spreading of a message or a show of support, spreading from one individual to the next, until the whole body joins in the show of unity.

Most Christian churches hold Candlelight Services on Christmas Eve, New Years Eve, and sometimes Thanksgiving. Often In a Christmas Eve Candlelight Service, the lights represent the entrance of Jesus, as the Light of the World. They also stand symbolically for the star that guided the wise men to the birthplace of the Savior. The service is a reverent celebration for that Holy night. The atmosphere created by the candlelight adds opportunity for participants to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas.

Other common reasons for holding Candlelight Services include remembering someone who has died, marking the anniversary of an event, raising awareness for a cause, praying for something specific, gathering survivors of a catastrophe to remember those who were lost, and for taking Communion. The candles in these events more often symbolize individual lives. They are also meant to remove any distractions from the purpose of the occasion and add a sense of solemnity to the event. Once the candles of the entire group are lit, they become a physical representation of a group unified for a single cause.

You may have your own service in mind; hopefully it is a joyous one. Candles always seem to burn more brightly when the occasion is a cheerful, and not a tearful one. You will find you can order an entire self-contained candlelight service from many sources. They come with a larger candle for the leader since theirs will be burning longest while they wait for everyone to light a candle. They also often include longer candles for ushers or others who serve to light the congregation or group candles; again because their candles will need to last longer while they go row to row serving the individual candlelight service members. The candles to structure a beautiful service can always be purchased separately, however for ease and cost effectiveness we have always ordered the set.
